Agree that private school coaching often helps to make applicants look better than they are. However, as someone who attended private school in the US, I can say that more than anything, I learned how to learn. Plus honor code (no lying, cheating or stealing) has stuck with me

What's your proposed solution? The policies at Oxbridge of requiring a higher bar for privately educated students seems to work fairly well (by metric of whether you went to private school is not a good predictor of degree class) so for me any change has to come pre-uni

It does need to start pre-uni, and there are various possible options, including outreach programmes
