Reality check - private schools educate 6.5% of UK students but make up 33% of domestic Oxbridge acceptances (down from 44% ten years ago). Going to a private school is still a massive leg up compared to state schools.https://www.ft.com/content/bbb7fe58-0908-4f8e-bb1a-081a42a045b7 …

Dominance of Oxbridge in UK public life is self perpetuating because the universities get first pick over the most talented students. The value added by the teaching is minimal (all the Oxbridge academics I know personally happily admit this).

Not sure I agree about the massive binary. There are several top notch non-Oxbridge universities the graduates of which are heavily sought by the most prestigious employers.

Binary element on whether you went or not especially crazy given variation between degree courses. Encourages folks to apply for “easier” degrees at oxbridge vs alternatives at Russel group, since the former opens more doors...

Another question is of Oxbridge is so good for society why create such scarcity? It is the scarcity and zero sumness nepotism (rub shoulders with the advantaged) that is hard to disentangle from everything else.
-
Because it's not elitest if everyone can have it, is it?

fwiw as an American I don’t view Oxbridge grads as being any more clever than those of, say, LSE or Imperial. All are equally impressive IMHO.

Heck I thought Imperial was one of Oxfords colleges lol
