I can’t believe someone seriously makes this argument when private school kids make up 7% of students but ~40% of Oxbridge intake. Going to private school is still a massive advantage, just slightly less than it was a decade ago
I looked it up and I'm a bit out of date, Oxbridge is ~26% private now down from ~37% in 2011, amusingly the increase in state admissions is only up 6.5% rather than 11%, rest of the increase is overseas students (hmm I wonder how likely they are to be privately educated...)

Most of it is if you can afford it then why not but reality is in many parts (not all) of the US public schools are superior.
