Still undecided on what wine to have with lunch tomorrow, but this 96 Vouvray is hitting the spot tonight.pic.twitter.com/crGt0MQoPZ

Bro, for a beer and whisky lover, what's the best way to learn/start vintage wines? My knowledge of wine stops at: "just give me cabernet sauvignon, shiraz or the driest red you have."

This is a really difficult question to answer in a tweet. You often hear that you should just drink a lot of wine and figure out what you like, but that wasn’t helpful for me. I found it much more fulfilling to pick a region and learn a lot about it (read books, blogs etc) while

drinking a range of different wines at different price points. I also think it is genuinely helpful to try some of the top wines in the region to experience the full range, whereas common wisdom seems to be to stick to the mid-range wines that offer the best value.

If you like cabernet and dry reds then Bordeaux is a good place to start. It’s simple enough to be understandable but complex enough to have interesting stuff to discover. It has some of the top wines in the world, but apart from the premier crus they are all pretty well priced.

"Difficult to answer" for sure, but a damn good one as always. Any Bordueax wines in particular you'd recommend as part of the region's "greatest hits"?

Lanessan and Angludet are great entry level Bordeaux wines that are very affordable but produce at a level well above their price. Sociando Mallet is at a price level above (~$50) and also produces really great wine for the price.

Above that around the $100 mark you are looking at the classed growths, I like Grand Puy Lacoste, Pontet-Canet and Clerc Milon, or the cheaper Leovilles (Barton and Poyferre) if you want to pay a bit more.

Above that ($200-300) you have the good second growths like Leoville Las Cases, Cos d’Estournel, Montrose or the Pichons. Then you’re into the first growths which I have not really tried so don’t feel qualified to recommend, though the insider belief seems to be to

drink Latour, Haut Brion and Margaux if you want better value, and pay less attention to Lafite and Mouton which tend to be overpriced.
