The UK currently kill 2.6m cows and 10m pigs each year, so requiring nearly all of the 50m adults to slaughter an animal seems, uh, somewhat overly aggressive.

Put another way — the average person in the UK eats 60-80kg of meat per year (mostly chicken). You get 200kg of beef from a cow.

I don't understand these kinds of arguments. Yes, I do think most people would be shocked the first time they visit a slaughterhouse. But stop eating meat? How do you think people got meat until very recently, except by killing their own animals.

Also you should be able to fabricate an entire Ford Mondeo from scratch before you're allowed a driving license.

Ah good idea, slaughtering a cow, with your fellows of course, is a pretty relaxing activity.

There are highly sought after butchery classes in London - not the same graphic experience but clearly not a deterrent either

I would introduce an "electronics license" which every adult in the UK would require before they purchase/consume electronics. To get this license, once a year they would have to go to Congo/Chile/China and mine cobalt/lithium/etc.

This idea was originally from Magnus Nillsen c2013. This article frames it slightly better than that comment.https://www.goodfood.com.au/eat-out/news/chewing-the-fat-with-magnus-nilsson-20130412-2hrtf …
