I find this very hard to interpret. Even with a control group that is age, ethnicity and risk factor matched, it seems likely that conditioning on “caught COVID and required hospitalisation” selects for patients who were less healthy to begin with.

Also not clear how much of the post-hospitalisation deterioration is due to COVID and how much is due to the effects of being in ICU for multiple weeks. If you put an otherwise healthy person on a ventilator for a month, they are going to have problems afterwards.

Still, numbers are big enough to be eye opening — 4x readmittance rate and 8x fatality rate warrants some serious examination
