Nepotism, inherited networks + a good dose of genetics. You find the same correlation (although not this pronounced) in more egalitarian countries, like Norway.

what are you tryna say? qualified applicants should give up their earned positions for clearly underserving minorities. "nepotism", what does that even mean? like has anyone ever seen a nepotism?pic.twitter.com/brAlEtr2Gv

Tiger parenting, generally much higher value placed on education by parents, and I am sure genetics plays a big role (twin studies). I'd expect much less nepotism in academia than in, say, investment bank:)

An interesting question would also be how does this compare with doctors and lawyers?

And another question - how does this differ by the country of birth or us/non-us born? (and there is the next level: 1st vs 2nd generation immigrants)

I’d imagine there’s also a bit of knowing the insider baseball — ex what good phd programs focus on for admissions, what good schools use to measure success of tenure track candidates (there was a recent thread for new Econ PhDs advising to try and publish their job market paper)

Academic is a very specific culture. Most people have limited knowledge) understanding of what these people do. I think most Americans they are "teachers." I was first gen Uni student. On my floor, I was often only undergrad with parents who didn't have a postgrad degree.

Nepotism seems way too neat an explainer. John Bates Clark Medal winner, Emi Nakamura, is a 3rd gen economist, and it seems like compounding three lifetimes of dinner table discussions really matters.http://www.irwincollier.com/michigan-johns-hopkins-and-harvard-three-generations-of-economics-phds-orcutt-nakamuras/ …

I think a lot is just information — knowing to take real analysis etc. Not everyone is following Anthony's threads!
