There’s stuff which clearly does make a genuine difference — grape variety, producer (and production method), vineyard, vintage. Experts in blind tastings can reliably tell these apart.
Then there’s stuff which clearly makes no difference to the taste even though people say it does — like the shape of the wine glass.

There are interesting cases like price and how the label looks, which obviously don’t affect the taste but do affect people’s perceptions of the taste — the point of blind tasting is to remove some of these biases.
Age is interesting since it obviously makes a difference, but you can’t do a side by side tasting which holds vintage constant and varies age. Experts can tell the difference between old and young wine but maybe within a threshold of 5-10 years (less for a young wine)
The best argument I’ve heard for the shape of the glass mattering — and my experience with this is mostly spirits — is it affects the nose, and I do buy that! Whisky out of a narrower thing like a glencairn hits you different than say an old fashioned glass.
I’m less convinced on like topologically similar-ish stemware, for example, but I gotta admit I feel way fucking fancier drinking out of those ridiculously zalto burgundies
Wine glass shape definitely matters, since it affects the relative proportion of alcohol vs. other volatile compounds in the nose. Try drinking armagnac out of a champagne flute vs. a brandy snifter for an extreme illustration
Ok I agree it matters in extreme cases. I’ll weaken my statement to “glass shape is *nearly* irrelevant”. Does drinking bordeaux from a burgundy glass or a viognier glass taste any different to drinking it from a bordeaux glass?
