One day surely everyone will speak Haskell.pic.twitter.com/RTqTm0p1nt
Little known fact is that Haskell remained of purely theoretical interest until Leibniz discovered a method of describing i/o operations with a purely functional framework and published it in his 1714 manuscript ‘monadology’
The symbols >>= and return were popularised by Leibniz but few realise that Newton had earlier developed an alternative notation using the symbols ‘join’ and ‘unit’ — the argument over whose notation was superior divided functional programmers across Europe for decades.
Expressing binds in Newton’s fluxion notation “join (fmap f ma)” was so cumbersome compared to Leibniz‘s elegant “ma >>= f” that it set back the development of functional programming in England for decades.
Later developments such as Traversable (Laplace 1726) and Applicable (Lagrange 1745) were exclusively developed in Europe, this was the status quo until Hamilton discovered an elegant encoding of spatial rotations as an instance of the Num class in the 19th C.
