      But markets are pretty close to efficient (maybe 99% of the way there) and inefficiencies disappear over time, so the average retail trader should treat markets as though they are efficient, and just buy stocks/bonds (in fact so should the 98th percentile retail trader!)

      Unfortunately bad data analysis and backtesting is an excellent tool for tricking you into thinking you have discovered an edge. Unless you have a good mentor the only way to learn that your analysis is bad is to lose money trying to trade it!

      I'd go ahead and argue that even if you do have a good mentor, losing money is pretty beneficial to the learning process.

      Hah. What I mean is that just being *told* that something won’t work is not enough to believe it. To really be convinced you sometimes need to see it for yourself.
