I'd go ahead and argue that even if you do have a good mentor, losing money is pretty beneficial to the learning process.
Judging by my team’s unwillingness to believe my criticisms of their research, I would agree.

Hah. What I mean is that just being *told* that something won’t work is not enough to believe it. To really be convinced you sometimes need to see it for yourself.
