Unfortunately bad data analysis and backtesting is an excellent tool for tricking you into thinking you have discovered an edge. Unless you have a good mentor the only way to learn that your analysis is bad is to lose money trying to trade it!

This explains why so many analysts/journalists have consistently bad and wrong takes — they never put money behind their ideas so they are never truly confronted with the fact that they are wrong.
