Matlab is convenient to use when you don't really have a strong a coding background. As that improves I think it's natural to move to other languages for other reasons which is why this ends up happening.

I like Matlab and find it easy to debug. Natively though, you can have functions of the same name in different folders, doing different things. Path order decides which one you use. Getting sloppy with Matlab is dangerous and is the default.
