I really don't get how the GameStop story is turning into a discussion about short-selling. There were a bunch of shorts. They lost a pile of their own money. They didn't hurt anyone else. What's the problem?

They've already shown they were massively out of their depth on clearing. Apparently their risk modeling for collateral obligations was way off. It's fair to ask if their revenue model of "loan out all client assets" on the custody side presents other problems.
