Often not a coincidence — eg someone is using a signal, notices it stops working so they are willing to talk about it, word gets around and eventually you hear about it (or something closely related) and start research, by the time you are done it is clear it no longer works

Ideas that someone tells you about (or that are sparked by a conversation on a related subject) are less likely to be fruitful than ideas that are completely sui generis for this reason.
