Im less informed than yall on this, but perhaps the point of trying to differentiate is to see how much squeeze potential remains. It can come from either source so knowing whether either of them is mostly done or not is the goal right? (maybe stating obvious)

As far as I know, there's no way to confirm a short squeeze really happened until the SI updates and shows a substantial decline.

I'd hazard we see another bump on GME on 1/27 for that reason.

why isn't the lending rate a good enough tell? Was it bc you mentioned you're unsure about how trustworthy that data is? Or are you saying its not enough to show short covering was primary driver? Does it have to primary driver to be a sqz?

Bingo. Short covering might be occurring too, but I consider the 0 day effect the strongest indicator that it wasn't the primary driver.
