That is until you check the historical max drawdowns of bonds outside of the 1980 - 2010 window. Bonds are FAR riskier than most people realize, it's just that their experience during the 30 year bond bull market misleads them.
Go calculate the performance of the mix I suggested over 1960-1980! It’s not great but it’s not disastrous. Adding commodity or inflation exposure would have helped of course, but that’s a bit off-piste for most people.
