Yes, but google will obviously want to distinguish a navigating car from a pedestrian or someone sitting in a bus.
Or if they do, it's likely to be in pedestrian mode; the newest phones can differentiate between this and driving mode.
I always do, as it shows the stops left and where you are on the bus route, particularly important when its dark outside and you have no idea where you are. Worse when its raining.
but i open maps on unfamiliar locations, esp when I don't know where to stop when I travel
If they’re new to the route they do so they know what stop to get out at.
