Instagram refers US sanctions as reason for account closures:
“We operate under the constraints of U.S. sanctions laws. We work with appropriate government authorities to ensure we meet our legal obligations, including those relating to the recent designation of the IRGC."

On talking about / 's decision to remove IRGC related accounts today. Major point though: content removal processes are unclear, and Instagram's statement today, referencing sanctions and the terrorist list were more so.

There is a good briefing on unclear content removal processes by social media companies that is relevant regarding today's decision about these Iranian Revolutionary Guards accounts that is a good reference. article19.org/wp-content/upl

It’s always refreshing to wake up to read accusations that you’re a defender of the Revolutionady Guards. I have spent a big chunk of my professional career trying to document their cruel and repressive work to erode human rights in Iran. I have no love for them.

What I did rather was criticize Facebook after they removed accounts based on reasons that lacked clarity& were arbitrary. These same decisions are used to stifle Palestinian human rights activists seen as threats to Israel, or Kurdish freedom fighters seen as threats to Turkey.

These decisions should be criticized. I said similar things when Telegram complied with a request of the Iranian government during protests. You need to demand accountability and transparency from these platforms on their decisions.

The page for the head of judiciary, Ebrahim Raisi is back up, after its brief takedown. While his one account was down, many others like it remained online, which again, further highlights the fact that there is unclarity in the content moderation process.

In a worrying sign for the filtering of Instagram, Iran's parliamentary cultural commission asks for there to be accountability with Ministry of ICT &Rouhani for allowing Instagram to flourish without local alternatives.

IRGC affiliated Tasnim News Agency () has its Instagram profile removed following Soleimani’s assassination. Unclear if because of Soleimani’s terrorist designation and their coverage of him. Semi-official remains live, with commemorative posts.

Individual Iranians are also reporting their posts are being removed by Instagram if they’re related to Soleimani. Would be good to get a statement on on the logic behind these removals.

Journalist in Iran reports posts removed: 1st of a Quronic verse commemorating martyrs, & 2nd a photo of Soleimani. Would be good to hear what 's decisions are on these moderation policies. Soleimani content still persists on Instagram despite these removals
