These are really cool! I think because they are JPEGs the encoding is causing some color to bleed into the grayscale areas. This is a crop of a small part of that image showing non-gray pixels in between two red lines.pic.twitter.com/CwPQ6PmSmu

These remind me of an effect I observed long ago: a color grating pattern where the stripes are different luminances will have paradoxical appearance at high enough spatial freq. E.g. a red-green grating appears as a yellow-black grating, with green=yellow and red=black!

Yellow of course is what you’d get if the bars got fine enough to no longer be resolved, but there’s a range where the luminance pattern and the color information get confused in weird (but straightforward when you think about it) ways.
