Novavax uses a new platform for its vaccine—a protein subunit—but I’m extremely curious if these results might mean the mRNA vaccines have similarly diminished effectiveness against vaccines in the real world. (But still high levels, especially for B-117!)

Novavax also committed 1.1 billion doses to COVAX, the international vaccine-sharing facility. That means countries around the world will see a highly effective vaccine. (The only question—and it’s a big one—is when.)

This is a great point — 55% effective against symptomatic Covid with the B.1.351 variant seems similar to a very good flu shot. But if flu shots prevented all hospitalizations and deaths, that would be an incredible breakthrough.https://twitter.com/wittyretorthere/status/1370191916990611467?s=20 …

55%. Flu-like. Darn. Miles to go...
-
The big question for me is how transmissible and fit B-1.351 is.

Were their definitions of mild/mod/severe similar to those used by J&J? I'm trying to find this info.
-
Good question! All I’ve seen so far is the press release — no study yet.

What are the side effects though? Are they as severe, and do they include fever?
-
No word on that yet — definitely paying attention for that!
