Some progress on new Potree Converter. Shows how color filtering affects the quality of the lowest level of detail. Instead of points, lower LODs will be voxels which won't change much except better compression rates. Accurate picking will require loading points on demand.

Reason #527 why I love CUDA: You can just pack everything into a single megakernel and do grid.sync() in between, like this two-pass gaussian blur inside one single CUDA dispatch. Great for live-coding when you want to add/remove kernels at runtime.

Awesome library of point cloud scans. Link in thread.

Screenshots below for Venice, all from a web browser The complete scan merges 10cm aerial scan + 1cm drone scan + 1mm ground capture, all within a single coordinate space.

CUDA is absolutely amazing. Almost full featured C++17 for GPUs. So many C++ features that make development and debugging easier, like strings in this case. Are there any attempts in making C++/CUDA work in Vulkan? Because I never want to use GLSL ever again.

Recently started CUDA and now I don't want to go back to GLSL. C-strings, recursion, pointers, all things that make live so much easier. Why can't we have C++ for shaders in OpenGL & Vulkan? Cuda and Metal already do it, and it's awesome.

Northern Canada looks like a bug in your terrain generation code. I guess it's something about plate tectonics? Does anyone know more about these kinds of formations?

Other fun stuff that isn't exclusive to CUDA but super helpfull: drawPoint, drawLine, drawTriangle, drawBox, etc functions. Great for visual debugging because you instantly see the results of your runtime compiled cuda program by simply pressing ctrl+s.

Pointers are great because I can now allocate a 4GB buffer, and add or remove intermediate data structures at runtime without recompiling the entire C++ program. Only the cuda kernel is recompiled with the cuda runtime compilation library.

Experimenting with CUDA now and it's awesome. Two features I don't want to miss anymore: - Strings - Pointers The former allows you to create labelled #imgui widgets directly at runtime from CUDA, while the latter allows you to reinterpret a buffer however you see fit at runtime

On the verge of switching from GLSL to CUDA for PotreeConverter. Unless it is somehow possible to dynamically define several pointers into a large buffer binding? Can you do something like that in glsl? Won't be able to support AMD cards if this doesn't work. :(

Our paper “Software Rasterization of 2 Billion Points in Real Time” was accepted at HPG! We'll present it at July, 12th. Also looking forward to the in-person keynote in Vancouver. :)

Left: Current Potree without color filtering. Right: Some experiments with color filtering in lower LODs for Potree 2. Same LOD resolution in both cases.
