It finally happened. Asia has its first open portal. Which country dared to do it first? The Philippines! Kudos! Turning into opportunity for progressive policy marks for others to reflect about.

I'd mostly like to stop the point cloud hosting services that take Potree, replace the GUI, then claim it's their software, with no mention of Potree anywhere at all.

Due to the growing number of companies trying to sell Potree as their own, with no contribution or any mention, I'm thinking of a more restrictive license for the future. What are good terms to use? Companies should continue to be able to host their own data on their own server.

And this is WebGPU rendering 68 million points (1.8GB LAS file) at 60 frames per second without any acceleration structure... o_o

WebGPU point cloud experiment: Rendering a 134MB LAS file with 4 million points.

Right now: 1 file per octree node => thousands to millions of files; super slow upload/copy/delete Soon: Whole octree in one file, using range requests to load individual nodes from that file. :D :D

Web developers: We've added a new experimental flag to use WebGPU in Microsoft Edge (and other Chromium browsers). This is currently only available in Canary. Enable the "Unsafe WebGPU" in edge://flags to try it out, and let us know what you think!

Soooo... this seems to work but it looks kind of awkward. Any suggestions on how to iterate through async&concurrently loaded batches of data using co_await to await without blocking the current thread? Looking for something like range-based loop, but for futures.

Awesome, Altap Salamander File Explorer is now Freeware! 😁I've been using it as a windows explorer replacement for almost 10 years now.

And this will be how "no background" will be demonstrated to show users how they can define their own background image with html.

Finally got a 144Hz notebook and now 60Hz feels awfully slow and stuttery. Didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

RTX in vulkan is pretty fast. I am hacking the Rtx accl system to show other primitives than triangles. A quick test using a point/sphere intersection shader. This model contains around 6 million points and runs at 1000 fps.

Everyone who has tried Potree with models with high depth complexity, like interior scenes with multiple rooms, dense vegetation, lots of noise, etc, might have noticed that it doesn't actually work all that well. WebGPU and progressive rendering will fix that.

And the future WebGPU API will allow us to implement progressive methods in Web Browsers. Potree will definitely migrate to WebGPU once it's here.

Also check out previous work from Ponto, Tredinnick and Casper on progressive rendering of point clouds with hierarchical structures: I think progressive rendering will be an essential tool to render point clouds with high depth complexity.

Question: Rendering shuffled VBOs is almost always slower. I have one case, however, where rendering 400 million points is double as fast if they are shuffled if you're zoomed out. If you zoom in, rendering shuffled points becomes slower again. Does anyone know why?

Having a lot of fun flying around the virtual Ridgecrest rupture. You can now download a post-earthquake 2 cm point cloud dataset acquired by drone SfM along parts of the Mw 6.4 and 7.1 http://156.56.177.220/earthquake/RC20190709.html
