@pip_tp you know about this sort of hocus pocus.

What size of species do you need TL identify at 200m ?
-
It'll be mainly mammals, ranging from smallest (jackals/warthogs/etc.) to largest being elephants
-
Hmm, 200m will cut out the cheaper kit but something like this would be idealhttps://www.scottcountry.co.uk/night-vision/monoculars/cobra-demon-gen-2/ …
-
Thank you! I figured that's the price range I'd need for good quality nv.
-
Talk to Scott Country they are very knowledgable. What’s the PhD ?
-
I'll be investigating waterhole utilisation, so will be using a combo of camera traps at some sites and 24-hr observational surveys (hence the need for nv)
-
Superb, FWIW I use a lot of camera traps / trail cameras here, they are working 24 hour a day and are so cheap now. Good luck with it.

Tricky to get one device that can spot with a wide angle (field of view), and still have enough resolution for species ID @ 200m. On NV zoom is digital so resolution degrades. Probs better getting 2. Pulsar XQ38 thermal for initial spot and a higher mag infra red for species I.d.
-
If you're trying to spot with a higher mag (good for species i.d.) it's a bit like seeing what's in a room by just looking through the keyhole.
