Auditors are an under-scrutinised player in the carbon market. In theory, they should have a crucial role in checking the quality of the credits. But critics say the system is plagued by conflicts of interest.

Our investigation with Fake bank accused of handling narcos cash and how it survived in plain sight in London and beyond. A Google search for Bandenia would have revealed mentions of money laundering. Yet there appears to have been little interest from authorities.

Shell has taken a very active role in these projects. It signed agreements with the developers becoming a carbon credits broker. This means it can use the credits to offset its own emissions or sell them to third parties.

2. The issue of additionality: is this already common practice or not? The answer appears to be yes. Experts and papers tell us around half of Chinese rice fields already use this irrigation methods. Central govt has urged for water-saving methods.

Developers of these projects seem to have been creative. Rice paddies that stretch uninterrupted across 200km are chopped up into smaller, distinct projects. This way each project stays under the threshold by a very narrow margin. Sat images show the distance between projects

Climate Home News identified a series of concerns with the projects. 1. A fundamental one: should the projects have ever existed at all. Rules say these projects need to be small-scale and, for that reason, emissions reductions need to be under 60kt CO2 eq per year.

Verra and Shell are both reviewing the projects after concerns were identified. The issue is that more than 450k credits generated by the projects have already been used to offset emissions. The biggest user has been PetroChina.
