When we try to force or resist it (both kinds of 'doing'), we interfere with it. What we're doing here is asserting old patterns. I see this clearly in Alexander Technique students. Say you're sitting and you want to stand. Most people re-assert sitting before they stand. 2/

The way to stand is to stop asserting sitting and allow standing to happen by itself. You don't need to be involved in it. It's the same in organisations. The more culture change is enforced, the more it's resisted. No - stop enforcing the old culture and see what emerges. 3/

I wonder about this at societal scale. We expend so much time and energy trying to create new systems, but we're still asserting the old ones, and so were stuck. It's like we're arm wrestling ourselves as a species. 4/

The thing about transformation is that it can be facilitated. We can learn or help each other to get out of the old patterns and then allow whatever happens next to arise. In Alexander Technique I would help you notice and inhibit your old patterns to allow something new. 5/

But that new way of being is unknowable. Such transformation can feel scary because it's out of our control. But it's the only true transformation. Anything else is just endless layers of self-deception. How can we stop asserting stuck patterns in ourselves and society? 6/

Notice it, non-judgementally. Don't try to change it. Have an intention for a desired outcome. Let go of any need or craving to attain that outcome. Let go of wanting to shape how it happens. Just wait, watch and notice. Then watch and smile as it happens in a new way.
