Thank you to friends, family, colleagues, mentors, and everyone in between. And a special thanks to my husband , who has believed in me, and in Southerly, with his whole being, even (especially) on days when I couldn't.

Thank you a million x over to staff and contributors over the years (so many of you!), and to board for endless support. Thank you to for being our fiscal sponsor for a couple years before we got nonprofit status.

Today, I want to thank many folks: staff and directors and my fellow fellows, who continue to challenge, support, and inspire me.
There's a list of many of their orgs here: southerlymag.org/2023/05/01/sou

There will be more on where we/I go from here soon.
But the reality is, we didn't have enough money to continue it alone. There's a lot to dissect about journalism and environmental funding—which I have plenty of opinions on as y'all know—but I'll save that for another day.

"Goodbye for now" is because this work of community-centered environmental justice journalism can't go anywhere. We've proven that it works. We have a model to replicate. Southerners are already doing the work every day, in every community, without the support they need.

What it took to accomplish those things is the courage to grow and evolve and change to better serve the people we wanted to reach. When I let go of journalism industry expectations, the vision became much clearer.

So much happened in between, but what really matters is this: real impact, and in rural places, low-wealth communities, and communities of color in particular.

I launched it as a media org in 2018. We held our first community event in Lowndes Co, Ala. + published the first stories that year.
wrote about us in her wonderful weekly column, and that set us off in many ways, too.

You can read more in the post, but Southerly started as a TinyLetter in Dec. 2016; here's me giving my first talk about it in WV. I freelanced and tried to figure out how to turn it into something bigger.

Also I do want to make clear that this definitely has to do with burnout and wanting to quit, and it definitely has to do with how much more exhausting the journalism industry – and not just legacy orgs — makes things (this work is already plenty hard enough as y'all know!)

Folks, I'm giving up Twitter for a while after today. It ain't serving me lately, and I'm hoping a break will make space and give me energy to focus on the things I really care about, including projects.

this industry — yes, nonprofit included — will never improve or change or solve any of the problems it claims to want to solve if this is how newsroom leaders frame the departures of employees, especially BIPOC women, due to burnout.

The first issue is an explainer: covers COVID-19 vaccines of course, but also offers info on evictions, utility shut offs, and solar, which is growing in the area. I’m even hoping someone will have a better name for it!

It’s an experiment — but folks say they think a newsletter is a good idea. There are few news sources (none IN Northampton for instance), and a lot of misinformation and decentralized info. the hope is we can grow it and eventually have community members contribute/run it.

Good morning. I'm angry and sad about what's happening in Georgia, and the way I know how to fight back is w/ information access — especially in Black and Brown and low-wealth communities in the South. Journalism is a vital community service. Donate if you think so too:
