Auction theory is fascinating. I have wanted to use Purple Pricing https://hbr.org/2013/05/any-business-trying-to-sell … for years in e-commerce settings but never had the chance/license.
-
Interesting. This sounds similar to Vickrey, but by descending the price in real-time it may generate a higher FOMO premium. E.g., seeing items getting sold may prompt someone to bid at a higher level than they would've in a fixed-duration sealed bid auction.

That's a
@matt_levine reference, right? (Great article, btw. My theory, to toss into the ring: "People consider auctions to be greedy & distasteful and selling roughly-at-cost to be virtuous".) -
Yes. Making it into Levine's "Things happen" would be the pinnacle of my idle-blogger career. I agree with your theory and am saddened that so many artists insist on starving themselves. If you developed norms that let y'all not-starve, y'all could make more sweet art!

Ahh yes, you're speaking my language. I'm building HYP, the social bidding platform for exclusive releases. I've been frustrated/ obsessing over pricing models, true market value, and the futile attempt to capture something as volatile as the market with a flat, stagnant price
-
Would love to chat!! We're applying the auction release method to exclusive releases in art, fashion, experiences, consumables, vehicles, architecture, and pretty much anything we can sell.

I am worried that if I participated in this I would not expect my *personal* data to be used for further market research. Having the demand curve is good, having email addresses associated with price levels enables perfect price discrimination, which is bad for me as a consumer.
-
Yeah, looking over the announcement it isn't clear that you will keep the information even of losing bidders after the auction is over.

Great post! I implemented Vickrey auctions at a previous employer, but the customers (corporate types) hated it, so eventually we reverted back to just normal pricing. I'm still fascinated by the idea, and this blog does a great job explaining why.
