I often disagree with @AlexNowrasteh but on this he is absolutely correct: A crucial part of any sound plan for strategic competition with China is redistributing a large number of talented Chinese people from China to America and having their kids raised to love this country.https://twitter.com/CatoFP/status/1403517912779010049 …

Now, I do believe we should selectively punish CCP members and in some cases their close kin. For any such, it’s reasonable to require assent to statements condemning the CCP before granting citizenship, maybe even entrance. But a *lot* of China is not a CCP member!

Of course, more exit means less voice which may strengthen the party’s hand *within* China. For folks who dream of regime change or a revolution in China, that’s a bad outcome. For we who respect China’s autonomy and thus see strategic balance as the way forward, it’s fine.

Especially if you believe, as I do, that the CCP’s rule is actually not some galaxy brain genius cannot-fail recipe for forever growth, but actually doomed to disappointing growth and increasingly serious policy failures, letting the CCP have more power may help the US.

When the party is most directly in charge they strangle growth and engaged in showing-their-true-colors acts of inhumanity and violence. Both harm China and reduce the threat it poses to American interests.

If we can simultaneously siphon off toooons of talented Chinese people, awesome! Also fun fact: Chinese people who immigrate to the US have higher fertility than Chinese people in China, and it’s not just a compositional effect!

Several people have said something like this and it’s true but not a big problem because America continues to rock, democracy is extremely appealing, and nationalism appeals in China precisely because the “China dream” is failing.https://twitter.com/TaupeAvenger/status/1403855727731507204 …

The success or failure of that strategy depends on how attractive American ideology is compared to Han nationalism to the new arrivals.

Theoretically it is sound. How it will work practically, I don’t know. Have you met Chinese students studying abroad and guaged their susceptibility to this sort of re-culturing?

I want to like this idea, but the CCP has shown that they are quite happy to blackmail ethnically Chinese people living overseas by threatening to make life difficult for their relatives stuck in China.
