This interview with Bill Gates reveals a stunningly illiterate view of economic development. He legitimately argues Africa is poor today because of.... fewer navigable waterways?https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/10/15/17957266/bill-gates-interview-poverty-economics-ai …

And his take on African development is stupid as stupid can be. He focuses on problems in central Africa, while neglecting the fact that institutional and economic development is progressing rapidly in eastern, southern, and even west Africa.

Its like as long as DRC exists people will never realize that Ghana is a thing and that Ethiopia is booming, apparently?

And like look at this quote. It starts out well, acknowledging that actually living conditions are rapidly improving throughout most of Africa. But then? Like, some kind of weird Trumpian turn: It's tough! So Tough! Really Tough!pic.twitter.com/2KIPx6S7po

Also I want to return to his quote about navigable waterways. That's bollocks. Africa has numerous navigable waterways... and strangely enough, the areas with the most navigable waterways in Africa are the worst off!

Why? Oh I dunno.... maybe because colonial powers liked navigable waterways and so colonial exploitation and the slave trade was most intense in areas around navigable waterways. Like, maybe it's the colonialism, stupid.

Also, Gates' argument about premodern African state formation is.... like breath-takingly regressive. The historical view that "Africa just didn't have serious states before colonialism" is some serious white man's burden bullcrap.

Gates' view as expressed is basically: 1. Africa was geographically predestined to economic inferiority 2. Its people never developed meaningful civil institutions on their own 3. The solution is to have fewer Africans in the future Seriously. Read it yourself.
