This interview with Bill Gates reveals a stunningly illiterate view of economic development. He legitimately argues Africa is poor today because of.... fewer navigable waterways?https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2018/10/15/17957266/bill-gates-interview-poverty-economics-ai …

Why? Oh I dunno.... maybe because colonial powers liked navigable waterways and so colonial exploitation and the slave trade was most intense in areas around navigable waterways. Like, maybe it's the colonialism, stupid.

Also, Gates' argument about premodern African state formation is.... like breath-takingly regressive. The historical view that "Africa just didn't have serious states before colonialism" is some serious white man's burden bullcrap.

Gates' view as expressed is basically: 1. Africa was geographically predestined to economic inferiority 2. Its people never developed meaningful civil institutions on their own 3. The solution is to have fewer Africans in the future Seriously. Read it yourself.
