Nearing 10 games now in the kingdom hearts franchise and I don't think they have even explained what exactly a "kingdom hearts" is.

It's the birthplace of all Hearts. Apparently it's in the Realm of Darkness, though it showed up in the Realm of Light during Birth By Sleep for some reason or another.
