I get the Clowns being surprising, since their whole fear factor comes from contextual modern western folklore and villians/monsters (IT, the Joker, ect.) But dolls? I figured that they'd be universally scary, due to the creepy Uncanny Valley they give off.

I’ve seen a lot of Japanese media use them to great effect in that way. The novel Another has a very creepy scene with them.
