Ichiban is this perfect mix of massive dumbass, somehow incredibly savvy about the world around him and the people he interacts with, and also so insanely charismatic that people can't help but get attached to him. He's a shounen protagonist except written well.

I think you can draw a consistent through line of Kiryu's motives being entirely family oriented, it's just who he considers his family to be at that point in time. They do have to stretch parts to make him more cohesive in later games though yeah.

Plus I think he not being constantly the focal point really makes the narrative more interesting and engaging; he has this party of friends who all have a joke or two, who have stuff to say Shotout to the incredible random conversations while exploring the city, always funny
