I do like him better than Kiryu. They are not in direct competition not trying to achieve the same ALTHOUGH Ichiban has 20 years of writing experience since his conception, Kiryu in the other hand, has been soft rebooted a couple times
He is a badass, loyalist in 0, who then gets soured on the clan as sequels go, then he is a family man trying his best, then a badass again, then a family man
I think you can draw a consistent through line of Kiryu's motives being entirely family oriented, it's just who he considers his family to be at that point in time. They do have to stretch parts to make him more cohesive in later games though yeah.
Yakuza is about family
Plus I think he not being constantly the focal point really makes the narrative more interesting and engaging; he has this party of friends who all have a joke or two, who have stuff to say Shotout to the incredible random conversations while exploring the city, always funny
I think his character is pretty consistent, he's just an old school honourable yakuza. I think there was an interview with two actual yakuza members who said that he was pretty authentic around 3?
