The concept of a Tamagotchi or those "you now own this digital life form" kids toys like those dudes in Blocks etc.

When I was little I found out that Tamagotchi could die. This of course reminded me of real life pets. Entrusting those to children can be a very scary thing. Now. Put yourself in the mind of that toy. What are you to those that play with you? You're trapped in a clear box. They flip it, shake it, throw it. They're happy one moment, harm you the next. You can do nothing. What comes next? You don't know, they don't know. That's scary.
