They nearly canonized a fan theory in Skyfall but backed out at the last minute. Very loose continuity.

A long standing fan theory has been that James Bond is an identity that comes with the 007 designation. This theory states that all the bonds were just different agents using the identity. The villain of skyfall was, albeit for a hot minute, was going to be a former bond
-
This theory is based off the non-canon '67 version of Casino Royale which openly states that James Bond is a title rather than a proper name, and the movie features multiple Bonds. Within the canon of the main series, the 2006 Casino Royale is a reboot of the franchise.

They nearly went with "James Bond is a fake name for agents that get a full past wipe" A little Jason Bourne-ish but like he said they scrapped the idea

What an amazing end to Sean Connery's bond it would have been.
