like he sees himself staring back at himself but really he's staring back at you who is playing as him so it's like you see you watching you stare back at yourself but not the you you're playing rather the you who is really looking, looking at yourself watch yourself watching you
Or I guess the buzzkill read would be that if his pupils were directed at himself there wouldn't be enough white showing to make them even the slightest bit visible in shadow, but either way it's an aesthetic choice to augment the creepiness so why not go with the creepy read?
