I think the best thing about it is how most fanservicey elements actually have a well-thought place in the lore. Materias are actually special, magic ore you can meld yourself and the gold saucer fits perfectly within ul'dah's political situation, for example

Not only is it one of the best written Final Fantasy games, it's one of the best MMOs ever made? Like....the raids are so much fun, grinding isn't ever tedious, getting to play every class on one character, and all the fanservice armor and crossover stuff, it all works.
