The best way to make pokemon interesting again is to completely wipe the slate of the current pokemon, allowing the core battle system to have a much needed rework and to prevent designers from relying too much on the old pokemon to fill out the dex.
if anything needs 0 touching in pokemon is the battle system, they could pump up the difficulty but the battle system works

ehhh, not sure how adding difficulty to the pokemon battle system as it is would work, as it stands it kinda boils down to rock paper scissors on crack. everything i've ever seen of competitive essentially boils down to mindgaming your opponent into letting you get one-shots off.

the last big step forward they made was adding double battles in gen 3 but like. Where do you go after that, triple battles? triple and rotation battles in BW sucked
