      I like to remember all those studies of Ozu that explained his formal peculiarities as part of his “Japanese style” and then they actually interviewed other Japanese filmmakers who all said “what, no, ozu does his own thing”

      FWIW I think four decades of “Japan is technofutureland” convinces people to assume every cultural object has a brilliant rationale or logic, but there’s also vastly more about open space and abstract form

      Yeah but there’s also the western acceptance that movies can be “just” entertainment that doesn’t have to have a message. Just weird that they assume it everywhere else. Sometimes the point is to not understand.
