Its because M&L took over as the Mario series RPG as it was redundant to have 2 RPG franchises under the same IP. Its the only silver lining with AlphaDream going bankrupt.
AlphaDream, makers of Mario & Luigi just filled for bankruptcy and I'm kinda heartbroken to see so many people saying 'Maybe we can have a good Paper Mario again' Like, why are you like this. People are about to lose their jobs.

I _just_ posted something similar. Not happy about people losing their jobs, but M&L 3 and onwards turned out super grating for me, so I'm relieved that I won't have to wonder if "maybe this time they'll recapture the magic of Superstar Saga or Super Mario RPG"

The idea is because they would not be able to create new M&L games maybe Nintendo greenlights more Paper Mario games as it would be the only RPG series left. Very sad, really.
