Congratulations to the PSP investigators for their super brave trial comparing intervention to nothing for primary spontaneous pneumothorax. The abstract seems to water down the great findings that leaving well alone is as effective and less harmful. DOI 10.1056/NEJMoa1910775

Here is the link to our UCL/Sanger smoking damage of the airway paper detailing the dramatic genetic damage occurring in 'normal' cells but extraordinarily showing after quitting a population of cells 'repair' the airway with no sign of smoking damage :0

Give up smoking today! If you do the smoke damaged airway cells in the lung are gradually replaced by new cells with no signs of smoking damage - that can’t form cancer.

Quitting smoking could allow new, healthy cells to actively replenish the linings of our airways, researchers believe. The shift in proportion of healthy to damaged cells could help protect against cancer 🚭 Find out more 👉

So exciting to see our latest UCLRespiratory work with the Wellcome Sanger team published in Nature today. Definitive evidence for a stem cell population in human airways resistant to smoking damage repopulating lungs with cells with no signs of smoking damage after quitting

Thank you to local GPs, the incredible Sammy Quaife and Mamta Ruparel and the local communities for taking part. Run from UCLH and Homerton hospitals. We have taken this leaning into our SUMMIT study now running across parts of NC and E London and hopefully expanding soon.

Lung screen uptake trial results published! An incredible 53% of invited people came for a lung MOT, lung health check and CT screen for lung cancer. Highlights hugely important approach via primary care compared to US statistics showing 4% screen rates.

David Baldwin presents the leading role of the UK in CT Screening and the fantastic efforts to get the NHS pilots up and running. He gave credit many people but of course he has been the workhorse of the many national documents getting this off the ground - we are all grateful!!

Great talk by UCL Resps Neal Navani guiding us through the new bronchscopic toys. He suggests the toys are cool but as yet still lack sensitivity but possibly have a future in delivering local treatments

Wonderful talk by Gerard Silvestri looking into the future of lung cancer biomarkers . He can see us using biomarkers for nodule prediction and possibly for scanning interval descisions...but for those at lower risk or even non smokers - not yet.
