As far as anyone can work out, UK thinking is that we want trade to be as frictionless as possible while being free to go bonkers and do whatever we want around the world. This is all alarmingly similar to the nonsense spouted by Mayhttps://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

The UK does have a couple of chips to play. First, it can give ground in areas like fishing, data, state aid etc in order to get a more favourable deal from Brussels. How much Brexiteers will like this is another question.https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

Second, the fear of the UK undercutting is very real. Remember, the single market is the EU's most powerful diplomatic tool. Anything that threatens to undermine it freaks them out. So the combination of 11 months and a ballsy government might focus mindshttps://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

However, the likelihood is that without assurances, the EU will simply restrict market access for the UK. And the EU believes that old pest geography will come back soon, meaning reality will hit in London.https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

Speaking of reality, the UK is about to get a couple large spoonfuls. When it comes to talking trade with both the EU and the US, it is going to be the smaller partner and to some extent will be expected to sign on the dotted linehttps://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

Both sides want a good deal, that's definitely true. And as the WA showed, Boris was willing to move towards Brussels in the end. However, this deadline is different to the first deadline and the consequences for both sides are far greaterhttps://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

But ultimately, it's fair to say that the EU -- as the bigger player -- has more of a safety net. The next Brexit deadline is looming. And for the UK more than anyone else, to get what it wants could require shutting its eyes and hoping for the best.https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/31/uk/european-union-brexit-intl-gbr/index.html …

Sorry, the pedant in me is provoked by your lengthy thread's repetition of the claim that the UK "becomes the first ever country to leave the EU". Algeria and Greenland were, I think CNN would accept, countries when they left, even if not member states when in the EU.
-
The pedantic counter-argument would be that the EU doesn't exist until the Maastricht Treaty, and they left before that, but that rather undermines the dramatic ambition of the "first ever" intro.
