Jocelyn further informs me that such wasps are basically harmless. They only sting when attacked, and their sting is no worse than a pinprick.

Jocelyn informs me that this massive species of wasp, one of which just flew into the car and landed on my leg, is known as the "cicada killer." Because it kills and eats cicadas.
