We abbreviate days of the week to three letters even though only two letters are required for uniqueness. Mon/Tue/Wed feel more "natural" to me than Mo/Tu/We, but is that just due to familiarity?
Oh, I think I get it: It's using the first *syllable*. Hence why Saturday, like Wednesday, becomes "Sat" and not "Satur."

Interesting that we don't do the same with the names of months, instead preferring the three-letter abbreviations. Using the first syllable would sound weird: Jan Feb March Ap May June Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec.
