One of the qualities shared among the people I admire is that they are uncompromising: "Conventional wisdom says you can't have X without sacrificing Y; I don't accept that, and I'm gonna bust my ass building something that has more X *and* Y than anyone else."
Y is usually "performance:" djb: Security + performance Tesla: Clean energy + performance Rust: Automatic memory mgmt + performance Y = "affordability" is so ubiquitous in consumer tech that we assume it by default; still, some people (e.g. Jobs) made it their explicit mission.
I think the reason a lot of awesome things try to outperform competition on X and Y is because X or Y improvements don't independently yield 10x better outcomes.
