Wisdom tooth extraction is very frequently done prophylactically (at least in the U.S.) and the line you hear from dentists is "Well, you'll almost certainly need them out someday, so it's better to do it while you're young." But they're referring to two different procedures!
"Get them out while you're young" means "pay $$$ to have them surgically extracted before they've had a chance to erupt." Whereas if you postpone, there's a decent chance they'll erupt without major complications, and then you can just have them pulled.
But I think most people assume (like I did) that wisdom tooth extraction *always* requires surgery. If you Google "wisdom tooth extraction," you'll get the same impression: most articles focus exclusively on surgical extraction, or gloss over the distinction.
So if you still have your wisdom teeth, don't get scared into removing them prophylactically. *Definitely* don't get them all removed at the same time. You'll be much better off if you wait until they start causing problems.
