Wisdom tooth extraction is very frequently done prophylactically (at least in the U.S.) and the line you hear from dentists is "Well, you'll almost certainly need them out someday, so it's better to do it while you're young." But they're referring to two different procedures!
Yeah so apparently if your wisdom teeth aren't impacted, you can get them pulled just like any other tooth, no surgery required. My dentist claimed he could do it in 5 mins. Still takes a day or two to heal, but you're not laid out for a week.

"Get them out while you're young" means "pay $$$ to have them surgically extracted before they've had a chance to erupt." Whereas if you postpone, there's a decent chance they'll erupt without major complications, and then you can just have them pulled.

But I think most people assume (like I did) that wisdom tooth extraction *always* requires surgery. If you Google "wisdom tooth extraction," you'll get the same impression: most articles focus exclusively on surgical extraction, or gloss over the distinction.

So if you still have your wisdom teeth, don't get scared into removing them prophylactically. *Definitely* don't get them all removed at the same time. You'll be much better off if you wait until they start causing problems.

Depends on the problem. Wisdom teeth are another part of the body that we have evolved to not need anymore. They are extracted because a lot of the time people’s jaws are not big enough and they cause issues when they come in.

You can’t always wait to see if they are a problem as the coming in will be the problem. A better recommendation to people might be to ask your dentist if your xrays indicate your wisdom teeth being a problem. If they appear to be well positioned then sure let them grow in.
