I want: - A dumb terminal - connected to an ephemeral cloud server - booting fresh from a set of config files - reading from/writing to networked storage that I control Is this possible today? If not, how do we get there?

All of the necessary pieces are there: Chromebook, NixOS, cloud VMs, Sia... But it would be lovely to have it all integrated into a seamless package.

IIUC Plan 9 was designed for this sort of architecture: dumb terminals that outsourced storage (and compute!) to other nodes on the network.

I suppose that, if you require privacy, computing on someone else's hardware is a non-starter. So the terminal can't be truly dumb, at least until someone invents performant homomorphic encryption.
