“More than two hundred years ago David Hume demonstrated the fallacy in deducing normative conclusions from descriptive premises: is and is not specify fundamentally different kinds of relations from those specified by ought and ought not” (p. 62)

Every morning I wake up I look forward to reading something; whether it’s a book, article, or academic paper, it’s never a chore for me. Studying human nature using an interdisciplinary approach has transformed my thinking, and made my life so meaningful and exciting

Living with anxiety is like being in a constant state of conflict on a daily basis. It can feel like you’re going into battle (a war); that you have all this armour (figuratively) but you’re never sure it will completely protect you from condemnation, humiliation, and failure.

There’s no such thing as morality, because if morality is encoded in our genes and as the whole basis of morality is choice, there is no morality. You can’t blame someone for doing something they are programmed to do. My brain hurts.

A smoke detector is a great metaphor for anxiety. They’re effective, sensitive, low-cost, slightly annoying; but ultimately you’re reassured in knowing it will come in handy during a real emergency. Unfortunately, readjusting the sensitivity is proving difficult today

I’m finally running out of space on my bookcase and been force to use my Marshall amp to stack books on. Pretty good problem to have, all things considered

Over-intellectualising the human experience is one of the flaws and habits I’m trying to change. I’m learning that simple language is most effective at conveying to others what I’m going through; rather than obfuscating and unnecessarily making things complicated

I’ve just finished reading “The Power of Bad”. It’s essential reading, especially for mental health clinicians. I could even see this being helpful in sessions with clients in explaining how, relative to positive experiences, how powerful bad ones are

I was thinking about this last night. Surprisingly (or not), differentiating these two can be quite difficult. Indiscriminate acceptance isn’t advisable, nor is wanting to change everything and creating a “new you”. Acceptance precedes change, as Carl Rogers said

There’s something immature and narcissistic about self-loathing and self-destructive behaviours generally. It involves too much emphasis on the individuals experience, and not enough on their relationships, responsibilities, and wider community they live in

My social anxiety is intimately linked with the threat, or reality, of social exclusion. The more I perceive it (often erroneously), the more I attempt to include myself in the group (often unsuccessfully), which ultimately leads to the exacerbation of the emotion

The feeling when you know you’re going through something significant but you don’t quite know what, and you can’t quite articulate the feelings you’re experiencing. Yep, this is my day today

I’m wondering what the social scientists I follow and read think of the “psychic unity of humankind” that was promulgated in the early 90’s by Tooby & Cosmides and Don Brown?

What I meant to say: it comes very easily to us as humans to seek out confirmatory information and evidence that supports our pre-existing beliefs; not to imply that I’m such an enlightened person that I don’t fall for that trap. Only that my beliefs have changed significantly
