Sustainable non-profits often make visible requests for donations, designate people to manage the business affairs, and even open their finances to their supporters. What if more OSS projects did those things?

You are right. It isn't directly related. But I do know of companies and individuals who are able to achieve that once they work more closely to foundations. For example, the ASF does employ some people directly, and also helps keep the lights on for projects.

Thanks for the shout out. Business blog here: http://business.jooq.org . But you cannot really compare jOOQ with the "volunteer based" vision of the original tweet. It's primarily a business. ASL licensing is primarily a pricing and marketing tool.
