Finished teaching the last session of our math tools course today! All materials should now be on the open Canvas site :-) Here are some more action photos from this incredibly rewarding month: (1) John Assad relates membrane potential to first-order differential equations /4

My dad wanted to quit his job so bad, but because I had just been born, he had to keep working to support the family. Always thankful for the sacrifices my parents made to give me the opportunities I have today. Without them I am nothing. /3

When I got interested in doing research, he was so confused. "Why would you want to do that?" He would always tell me his stories of performing endless surgeries on pigs in a dark basement. Needless to say, I'm glad not all research involves harvesting pig hearts... /2

My immigrant father came to the States in 1995 in search of a new adventure. He relinquished his fancy status as an MD to slave away in a research lab under a PI who severely underpaid him. Today, I read his first and only first-authored research paper: /1

    • Read everyday. • Spend time with nature. • Ask questions. • Never stop learning. • Don't pay attention to what others think of you. • Do what interests you the most. • Study hard. • Teach others what you know. • Make mistakes and learn. • It's Okay to not know things!

Insights* from the interface of theory and experiment: -Hardest thing for a mathematician to learn: just because the math is right doesn't mean the model is. -Hardest thing for a biologist to learn: just because the model is wrong doesn't mean it's not useful.

Exciting new paper from , suggesting that music-selective neural responses are present to a similar extent in musicians and non-musicians. Even without training, music shapes the functional organization of the auditory cortex.

Wow. This is shocking. Under-citation of papers by women led teams in neuroscience is increasing, and driven mostly by citation practices of men-led teams.

Much thanks to the other "Math Tools for Neuroscience" courses at other institutions (run by people like etc.) that inspired us to create our own and lended their materials. /3

It was super challenging but also fun to figure out how to condense the basics of linear algebra, diffeq, dynamical systems, and probability theory into a 1-month intensive course. Teaching is time consuming, but certainly also fun and rewarding :) /2
